IP law and magicians

September 15th, 2007 in Links

A brilliant argument against IP law (based on this paper).

Law (especially IP laws) should exist to enforce our ethical obligations, not as a basis for extracting more money from a market. If people want to protect their creations, they need to make them compelling, instead of brewing ways to force people to pay more. If you scheme against your market long enough, people will figure it out.

When I see companies obsessing over product licensing, I get worried. There’s a right way to charge for things, and a small number of options to balance. Obsessing over something so simple is either greed or ignorance, and the time is better spent making the product or company better.
