Just a quick thank you for your clear example of how to call Perl from PHP that Google coughed up for me in my moment of need this morning (http://warpedvisions.org/2004/05/20/calling-perl-from-php/).

John Gruber of DaringFireball published an excellent little Perl script yesterday to turn headlines into “title case” (http://daringfireball.net/2008/05/title_case). Users of our CMS-backed sites often post shouty headlines, so this seemed a quick fix: since I didn’t fancy porting it to PHP, my “Plan B” of calling it from PHP – if that was even possible – works beautifully by taking your example and wrapping it into a general-purpose “call-a-Perl-script” function.

I’m waffling on moving some of my sites to a shiny, new VPS, but I’m also pretty happy with shared hosting for most things.

If I can chip in in any way – I’m not sure what are your VPS options, but I went all the way of hosted → VPS → cheap-dedicated, and you might want to consider staying on either side of this path. I’m always cautious to suggest ServerPronto, as googling seems to indicate people having issues with them, but it worked fairly ok for me for the past two years (where ‘fairly ok’ means no downtimes other than about one a quarter for ten minutes). Their simplest server is $20/month and is short on RAM, but if 128 MiB is ok for me, so I never looked back on the over-loaded, $30/month VPS I used before.
