Running Firefox2 on Ubuntu 8.04

HOWTO run Firefox2 in Ubuntu 8.04. If you’re already running Firefox3, the Firefox-2 symlink will not start the right version of Firefox until you shut down FF3. Now I can test sites in FF2 again without booting my 2k VM.

Real Gnome widgets in Firefox, finallyIt’s funny but I never realized how much Firefox’s non-native widgets bugged me. I installed the Grand Paradiso (beta 5) last week, and was surprised by how much smoother it felt. It’s a combination of things: it’s faster, the XUL widgets behave better, and many of the in-page widgets use the Gnome native controls1.

A tangent idea found it’s way into my virus-ridden brain: why not replace the window manager with Firefox and a local web app? You could do a consistent desktop metaphor on Windows/Linux easily, and applications would just be links to web apps (some may be google-gears-able). Would be fairly easy to snap it in a Linux distro too …

I love the concept of del.icio.us, but because it’s separate from the browser it’s a pain to use. Enter the del.icio.us Firefox plugin, which replaces Firefox’s weak bookmark tool with taglicious zen. Most excellent.
